The Karnataka Food and Civil Supplies Department or the Karnataka State Food Commission. From Monday evening, low-income families across Karnataka will begin to receive money directly into their accounts in lieu of 5 kg of rice that the state has been unable to procure under its Anna Bhagya scheme. Every beneficiary will receive the amount within 15 days, said Food and civil supplies minister KH Muniyappa. Every below-poverty-line (BPL) person’s account will be credited with Rs170 per month, going by the Food Corporation of India’s standard rate of Rs 34 per kg of rice. Under the scheme, Congress had promised to provide 10 kg of rice for free to BPL families every month — 5 kg each from the Centre and the state.

Siddaramaiah, the chief minister of Karnataka, declared on Saturday that the Anna Bhagya initiative will start sending funds to holders of Below Poverty Line (BPL) cards on July 10. As a result of difficulties obtaining rice, the government decided on June 28 to provide BPL families cash instead of additional kilograms of rice. Insisting that the monies for this month will be transferred promptly, Siddaramaiah made it clear that the money transfer would start on July 10. The procedure for disbursing funds to recipients will begin on July 10 to guarantee fast distribution of this month’s funds. The amended proposal calls for the government to contribute 34 rupees per kilogram of rice, with the Union government covering the other five kilograms.
