National Crime Records Bureau information (NCRB)

  • To provide the Indian Police with information technology solutions and criminal intelligence so that they may successfully enforce the law, the National Crime Records Bureau, an affiliated office of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, was founded in 1986.
  • In India, police departments began to be computerized in 1971. CCIS was launched by NCRB in 1995, followed by CIPA in 2004, and CCTNS in 2009. Approximately 15373 police stations and 6000 higher offices are connected with the CCTNS nationwide.
  • The NCRB produces and disseminates national crime statistics, such as those on crime in India, accidental deaths and suicides, incarceration rates, and fingerprints. Policymakers, the police, criminologists, researchers, and the media in India and abroad use these publications as their primary sources of reference.
  • When CCTNS is fully operational, it will also offer a variety of services to the public via the Citizen Portal, including the ability to search for a criminal or suspect on a national database.

  • NCRB has launched several IT-based public services, including Vahan Samanvyay (online Motor Vehicle Matching) and Talash (matching of missing persons and dead bodies). The Counterfeit Currency Information and Management System (FICN) and the Color Portrait Building System are two other programs that NCRB maintains (CBPS).

  • A national repository for all fingerprints in the nation, the Central Fingerprint Bureau was founded in 1955 and is also a part of the NCRB. It has a database of more than one million ten-digit fingerprints of criminals (both those who have been convicted and those who have been arrested), and it offers a search function on FACTS (Fingerprint Analysis and Criminal Tracing System). Soon, it is proposed to upgrade to NAFIS so that police stations can send fingerprint and fire query requests to NCRB online.
